   Spye Park Cricket Club News

Proudly Irreverent Since 2004 and Seemingly Incompetent Since 2007

Is it a bird?..... Is it a plane?...... Nope - but it is a web-site update!
I would apologise for the lack of activity but I've been too drunk to really know what's been going on these last few weeks. Five weekends - 3 stag do's and 2 weddings and there's plenty more to come. Why do you care I hear you ask? You probably don't - but two of said stag do's were Spye Park members and can I just congratulate Messrs Hulse and Doel for taking their passing of rights with such humour and grace. Congratulations also to Rich Bowater and the beautiful Caroline on tying the knot and a cracking bash.
There will be news and evidence from the above events to be uploaded shortly......heard that one before.

For news of the 2's first game and a chance to see England v New Zealand - see below. Please also note Sunday team fixture changes including:
Sunday 4th May - Hambrook Away
Sunday 25th May - Malmesbury Home

June 22nd Bratton game is now Away

Aug 3rd Uffington game is now Home.

I am off on holiday now so you'll have to get used to radio silence again for 10 days. Good luck to the 2's on Saturday and catch most of you for a beer soon I hope...

ON A MORE SERIOUS NOTE - THERE IS PLENTY TO BE DONE UP AT THE GROUND TO GET READY FOR THE NEW SEASON. PLEASE GET IN CONTACT WITH DAVE BEAL IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP - HOWEVER SMALL A CONTRIBUTION, TOGETHER - WE CAN MAKE THAT DIFFERENCE. I LOVE SPYE I DO

2nd XI KO v's Swindon United Church's
So here we are, it’s still April, the sun is trying to come out and the gentle soothing sound of leather upon willow isn’t far off.  Over recent weeks there has been a feverish amount of work going on at the club, the ground is being got ready as we speak (any help much appreciated), the old club house (bless her) has been cleaned out and is sparkling in the sun and new club house is being developed!

BUT, The New Season begins here– this weekend - Saturday 26th April, we play our first league game away at Swindon United Churches.  What with it still being April and with lots of people still having other commitments to finish before the season starts in earnest we have put together a “club team” rather than an out and out 2XI but hopefully we’ll still give Swindon United Churches a good run for their money!  Please do check the website next week we’ll post the result and a match report.  Well to be honest, it might not be next week that we post our results but it will be some time in the near future when our “web-editor” returns from his warm weather, pre-season, training camp!

UP THE SPYE – see you soon

Alex Bowater has some spare tickets for the above game - don't miss this great opportunity to watch the mighty England. A chance to see the penultimate one day international in the middle of the June 2008 series. Alex has seven tickets for the cricket in Bristol (£55 each or near offer.) He’s only gone and managed to double book so there are surplus tickets to requirements. Please let Alex or Rich know if you would like to see some international cricket this summer.

Spye Park 2nd XI - 2008
The new cricket season is fast approaching, the sun is shining and we have a new captain and vice-captain of the Saturday 2XI - yours truly, Tom Mornement and Kevin Clarke.  We’ve been involved as players in the 2nd XI for the last couple of years and when Paul Hughes decided last year that he no longer wanted to run the team Kevin and I thought that we would have a go!

So, what have we been doing so far?
  • We’ve been to committee meetings (!)
  • Spent some time up at the ground helping to blow away the cobwebs and watching the development of the ground-works for the new pavilion
  • We’ve also been on the phone and have spoken to a number of people who not only played last year but have played in the past and we’ve had some really positive reactions and real interest in the coming season

What are we going to be doing?

  • Playing to win but having fun and enjoying our cricket as much as we can
  • Supporting the club in its development for the future
  • We’re going to be using the website much more as a means of communication so please do keep an eye on it for news and updates about team selection, match reports and more
  • And this year is going to be the year that the 2XI graduates from Division 7!
Did you know.....?
Our first 2nd XI league game is away at Swindon United Churches on Saturday 26th April 2008? Currently we’ve got a full team committed to playing in this game, which is awesome when you consider its still 4 weeks away and the Football season is still in full flow!

We have tried to get in touch with as many people/players as we have numbers for, but there is no doubt that we will have missed some of you out, so if we haven’t called you already and you’re keen to play either a full or part-time role this summer then please do call or email us as soon as you can, we would really like to hear from you.

Tom can be contacted either on 07815 865 415 or via email at tom.mornement@purplehousehr.com.

Spye Park CC Members Contacts Database
Having been voted in as Club Secretary (for my sins!) I'm trying to get an up to date contacts database together for all Club members. Please could you all help me out by sending me the following details: full name, nick name (if applicable!), current address, email address, phone number, team(s) played for, year joined Spye Park CC.....
Please fill in this form (in pdf format) and email or post back to me (postal address at the bottom of the Contacts page, link to the left)
Charlie Doel wins a pint of his lager of choice for getting in first - I will reward every 10th response in a similar fashion - nothing like a good old bribe to get the action going....

Welcome to the 2008 Season
We're only a month or so late but as we approach the new season we reckon the time is right to crack on with some new season resolutions. We know we know - we can hear your derisory cries already as another empty promise hits the pages but with a new season comes a fresh approach.

We need YOUR help.... we as in Tim and I as your humble web-site editors to feed us news and views and plenty of scandal; we as in Dave Beal who has generously volunteered to coordinate the maintenance of the ground over the coming season; we as in the whole Club to launch us forward into what is set to be another successful season.

Now when we say another successful season, we can only refer to successes over recent seasons on the pitch. Whilst this remains our priority over the coming months - we are really looking to use 2008 as a launch-pad in terms of progress off the field. This isn't to take anything away from the usual pretenders and long-term stalwarts of the club who have continued to give generously of their time and energy over recent years.

Most of you will be aware of the plans to build a new Pavilion and we are pleased to report that this project is progressing - with a fair wind and a favourable planning decision, works could start before the season starts. What you may not all be aware of is that this scheme has been driven entirely by the Estate and whilst the Club is set to benefit from this development, we have been spared the significant expense that comes with it. With this in mind and having taken some time to reflect over the close season - we feel it's time to get all of us Spye Park CC members together to build the whole Club up over the coming and future seasons so we match the quality of our ground and (fingers crossed) new pavilion.
