The new season is still several months away and some of us are still getting over 2009, but plans are afoot to make sure that we are all ready for the 2010 season when it finally arrives. Attached are details of the indoor nets that have been booked at Calne Leisure Centre in March and April 2010. Details also of two pre-season friendlies that have been arranged to further help preparations. You will of course be reminded of all these events closer to the time, but make sure they are the first entries in your 2010 diary when you get it..." Contact Rich if you have any queries

Lost Property

On sorting out my kit at the end of the season I found a:-

Small (6 inch long) black pouch (G&M) that I presume is for cricket sunglasses - it also contains two silk inner bags plus a set of black earpieces & wires.

If anybody recognises them please get in touch.

Adrian Mercer (NB - see reports pages for Tour reports)

and then it's all over....
Unbelievably the end of the League season is now upon us - to catch up on recent results and reports check out the links to the left of this page together with a feast of end of season stats compiled by Rich and Tom

Life at last
In tune with the weather we've been subjected to these last few weeks, the Website has had a bit of break but seeing as the weathermen and ladies (strongly urge you to check out the Sky Sports News morning weather updates.....) are now predicting some sun-shine I though it was time for a bit of an update.

Results and reports have been updated for the League teams - nothing received from our midweek or Sunday team friends recently.....please put that right kids. Teamsheets have now been added to the fixtures page - follow the link to the left.

100 Club: July Draw
This months winners were as follows: (winnings will be winding their way towards you shortly.....)
£50 - Pat Dolman
£25 - Maisey Mornement
£15 - Kev Clarke
£10 - Ben Macey

The 2nd XI winning streak continues....
Inspired by half centuries from Kev Clarke and Matt AKA 'High Street Honey' Hutchins and a steaming 5-for from Sean 'Bad Boy For Life' Hughes, the Saturday 2nd XI continued their winning streak with a massive win against Warminster. It couldn't get much tighter at the top of League 6 with just 2 points separating the top three and Tom Mornement's men right in the mix and ready to pounce on top spot. Mornement was reputed to have 'really wanted' this latest win with his impressive man management skills drawing the best from his talented tyros (to understand what Purple House can do for your recruitment needs please see their website: http://www.purplehousehr.com - Purple House - working with YOU.

If only the 1st XI could match the winning desire of Mr Mornement's men.....not to say that there is any lack in desire, more a lack in application as Bowaters boys racked up a second consecutive defeat to Devizes who ran out worthy winners largely thanks to Alex Penny who turned the match with a top knock. This leaves Spye in the unenviable position of wanting / needing to get back to winning ways with home games against KC and Bradford on the horizon. Not unenviable in terms of the opposition - who we have no reason to fear and want to make up for early season defeats away from home, the dilemma really being that if we do step up to the plate and chalk up a win or two then there will be only one true benefactor and that will be the charming chaps from Devizes.....should they continue with their winning form.....watch this space.

Off the field, cheap pints of Stowford and an incredible deal on sambuca got the lads off to a flying start. Consolidated with a cracking pint of Stowford (or two, or three) at the recently re-opened Southgate Inn (well worth a visit people, if for no other reason than to say hi to Charlie 'Beetroot' Moss and his dazzling fashion ensemble.....you have to see it to believe it). On a serious note, thanks for the absinth Charlie - not from me, but from the taxi driver who had a free spray paint when he dropped me off a few hours later. Not pretty. There was only one way the night was going from the Gate and that was DOWN, to the bin. Enough said.

Senior Nets
Nets continue to happen every Tuesday evening at Spye Park from 6.30pm onwards. With both Saturday League teams involved at the top, or towards the top, of their respective Divisions and with the Sunday team having games coming out their ears, there is more reason than ever to come along to ensure that no rust creeps in during the week. It's also a good chance to prepare if you are involved on a Wednesday evening.

There is no charge for the session and with selection taking place at Spye on Tuesday evenings, the captains and selection committee members will have as one of their considerations the effort that players make to get there and to practice with a view to either cementing, or earning their place in a side. This is a crucial part of the season for everybody, don't let complacency creep in!

If there are weather issues and you aren't sure whether nets will be happening on a particular evening, speak to Rich Bowater (07931 900882).

Congratulations to both Saturday teams.....
Both teams continued their run of form with resounding wins last Saturday. The 1st XI skittled Burbage and knocked off the 78 runs for the loss of just 3 wickets picking up a handy 22 points in the process. Slip ups by the leading teams have opened up the league with some testing fixtures for all those challenging at the top coming up in the next 3-4 weeks. The 2nd XI thumped Goatacre and maintain their challenge in Division 6 in what is looking like a tight contest to come out on top. Good luck to everyone this coming weekend.

Thanks to all those that organised the Club BBQ on Saturday night - and thanks to players, members and supporters for coming along and enjoying the night with us. It was a great evening although a shame that there was no cricket on offer after the 1st XI made light work of Burbage following which the Burbage 'pub XI' made light work of ours! Thanks also to the lads from Burbage for hanging around and getting involved with the BBQ. Nice

Competition time.......
To earn your chance of winning a two week all inclusive holiday to a 5* resort on a Greek Island of your choice, waited on hand & foot by Girls Aloud or Take That (your choice) with a balcony view over the first Ashes test (aided by Google Earth's new global zoom cam).........I hear you asking is this real? Can it get any better? - It can, £5 spending money also included as is a barrel of cider.

All you need to do is to guess the length (number of words) of Tom Mornement's AKA 'The Scribe' next match report for the 2nd XI.....given that Tom is away this weekend, the match in question will be the game at home v's Potterne 3 on 27th June. Email in your entry by midnight Friday 26th June for a chance to win this awesome prize.

Disclaimer: the Website reserves all right to substitute competition prizes given unforseen circumstances such as global economic meltdown or even the fact the prize simply doesn't exist

Offerings received: (word estimates remain confidential at this stage!)
1. Rich Bowater - a solid guess at 300
2. Maurice Johnson - a monster, let's hope not - 5,00203

5. John Beal Jnr - 250
6. Emily - 180

So what's going on?
The 1st XI continued their winning run at the weekend with a comprehensive victory against Bath Civil Service at The Field of Dreams. Bath were missing a few players and played with ten men up against a strong Spye XI. Batting first, we recovered after the early loss of Andy Ellis and Dave Beal keeping the run rate going throughout. Rhino anchored the first 30 overs or so before falling (literally) agonisingly short of his ton, LBW for 97. Skipper ensured that we posted a score on the right side of 250 with a gem of a knock, incredibly for a man of his talents registering his maiden 1st XI 50. Follow and we will lead mate. (Have I got that right?!)
In response, Dave and Churchy picked up a couple of wickets in the early stages before handing over the middle order 'under card' for the Incredible Hulse to mop up with a delightful mix of pies, turksh delights and the odd genuinely good ball.... perhaps a slightly jealous, bitchy analysis but he only skips in off a couple of paces and its really not cricket you know! Fens chipped in with a wicket at the death and Spye wrapped up a convincing win, picking up 23 points. Now in 4th place - with only 9 points between four teams, every game and every point counts. Big games coming up against Box and Burbage over the next few weeks.....up the Spye.

The 2nd XI had a weekend off and will be chomping at the bit for the match v's Devizes this Saturday.

The Sunday team are suffering from over-subscription with so many of you keen for a game on Sundays. Please bear with us as we try to arrange additional fixtures to keep you all in cricket....if you have any grievances for lack of cricket for any of the teams please speak to your Captain or any member of the committee - details provided on the contacts page, follow the link to the left.

Your assistance is needed please! After early season diligence we need to keep on top of things behind the scenes. In particular we need to keep the Pavilion clean and tidy - not an easy task given the number of games etc that goes on each week. Please make every effort to keep things clean and tidy whenever you are at the ground and in particular after each match. The Captains have enough to do and we rely on everyone helping out with this and I know you all appreciate use of what is an incredible facility. So next time you're at the ground take a look around and if it needs sweeping up, crack on with it! Thanking you in advance......HOT off the press - thanks to Rich Bowater and his team of 1st XI assistants for undertaking the first of our fortnightly DEEP CLEANS at the Pavilion tonight (Monday)! This will be rolled out on a fortnightly basis with each team taking responsibility so keep an ear out for calls of assistance from your captains.

President's Match - Sunday 28th June
The popular President's Game is happening on Sunday 28th June. Further information is available at the Pavilion and Rich needs to know who is available for selection. If you are, or if you have any questions, please contact Rich.

***** always seems to be the hardest word....
The website would like to take the opportunity to apologise to members of the Club. We should always make clear that views expressed on this widely distributed and extensively reviewed frontier of media delight are those of certain individuals and not those of the Club en masse. Accordingly certain retrospective editorial adjustments have been made and greater care in the future will be made to distance Website contributors from the Club as a whole.

For those scandal mongers out there please don't hold back - let rip and send in and rely on us to treat with utmost sensitivity - or more likely to include appropriate disclaimers!

.....and breathe!
The moment we have all be waiting for - a win for the 1's, at last! It was looking far from certain as we batted first and got off to a steady if unspectacular start. Then entered Nipper, riding his mount of lady luck (to be fair there were just a couple of chances offered) he cut swathes through the Hinton bowling attack on route to a magnificent unbeaten ton. Ably supported by old man Bathe, brother Dave and the incredible Hulse we posted 275. In response Hinton got off to a good start, ably supported by yours truly, before Dave Beal and Hulsey bowled unchanged for 24 overs to drag us back into the match. Picking up wickets and stiffling the flow of runs we were back in it, eventually winning by 30 odd I think. Win number 1 - what a treat.
Jon Bathe
in action!

Another win for the 2's with notable performances with Jack Bramwell and Wayne Young seeing the boys climb the table. Batting first Spye ensured maximum batting points, posting 225 thanks to contributions by Wayner (56) and Jack (45). In reply Trowbridge gave it a good go but wickets continued to fall with Spye picking up 21 points for their 24 run victory. Next up Cooper Avon (for both teams as it happens) with the 2's seeking to consolidate their climb up the table.

2nds post first win whilst the 1st XI continue to struggle....
Congratulations to the 2nds for their thumping win over Highworth at the Field of Dreams. Having skittled the opposition out for less than a 100 - largely thanks to Chris 'Blondie' Beaven rolling back the years and working his magic - openers Mornement and Taylor rattled off the runs to secure a clinical 10 wicket win.

The 1st XI continued to struggle and having been inserted after losing the toss were soon reeling at 5-3 after just 5 overs. Stubborn resistance from Hues and Hulse laid some foundations for a recovery of sorts, built upon by a bullish knock by Charlie Doel making his first league start of the season. Spye managed to post a total of 142/8 - respectable given the conditions and useful opening spells by the Bradford quicks. Spye fought their way back into the match after a distinctly average start in the field but weren't quite up to the mark and eventually falling to a 3 wicket defeat. Difficult times for Bowater's men but signs of improvement and the boys (plus Dolly) are gunning for a return to winning ways....match report :NB - match report adjusted. The Website would like to apologise to members of Spye Park CC for any discomfort caused by previous ramblings.

Up steps a budding literary genius.....
Reporting on another loss for the Club, this time in the midweek cup game, the one - the only - Liam 'Pat' Butcher (pictured right) spins a yarn.......read on

If you want to rate this report please vote by following any of the email options below:
5* - can't get any better

3* - distinctly average
1* - self-promoting poppy-cock

As at 8.40pm Thursday 14th May you seem to be liking the works of Liam 'Shakespeare' Pat Butcher - 100% 5* rating......come on people don't me down, someone out there can't like it

4 days later and we have our first 1* star rating......"does this mean that we can look forward to further ramblings from The Bard? Maybe we should have an “Ask the Bard” session on wider issues not just how many wickets he’s taken - even Mr Church has the good grace not to harp on about how many wickets he takes every week (why is that!) and he, has sole access to the content on the website".

It's also been pointed out to me that the email address on the 1* rating was incorrect (now rectified) so maybe there are more dissenters out there?

We've been waiting for it and here it is - another 5* rating apparently they 'love you Ricky!'    (19 May 09)

And the beat goes on......
Two weeks into the new season and the two league teams are yet to register a win.....in fact as far as I know, the whole Club is yet to register a win as I've heard NO news from the Sunday team and about the same from the mid-week mincers..... If you are all still out there and there is news - get in touch people.

So we must all be at a low ebb, which isn't good just two weeks in so I've taken in on my shoulders to release you from your pain. Not quite sure how as yet but hoping that I get some divine inspiration over the course of the next ten minutes or so. Here goes.

MISSING FOOTWORK - have you seen this man?
Last seen at a cheesy dance off near you but as far as the cricketing version goes, last seen a while ago now.

Suggestions please as to how we can put the horn back into Rhino's batting.....best offering received wins a beer on demand from me anytime you see me in a pub until both League teams register a win

Initial offerings from the public include :

"I think that the problem might lie with his time machine – clearly Tim has travelled back in time and met a young Jimmy Hill (pictured over Tim’s right shoulder!) – I assume that as he returned from the 50’s his feet got left behind!"

Is Lizzie feeding him Laxatives to lessen the nocturnal activities The Rhino gets up to?

In the practise rooms at the Britain’s Got Talent studio, one competitor practises his Dad Dancing routine – whilst Tim Rhino Hues gets the Horn and makes a dash for Amanda Holden on the other side of the room!!

Disclaimer - your Editor accepts no responsibility for the crudeness, cruelness or sheer tastelessness of contributions posted. Please read in good faith!
As for the rest of you.....none of you are safe. The Rhino is an easy target what with his thick skin but I'm coming after you all....best advice I can offer is to suggest you shop someone else before I find incriminating evidence of you or get so bored I make something up......crank it up please readers.

Bu$$er whether we were ready for it - we were well and truly rumbled.....!
A disappointing start for the League teams this weekend with both sides suffering defeat - the 1's at home to Devizes and the 2's away at the hands of Warminster.

Both sides gathered in the Cromwell to share their sad tales of defeat before heading on into town to finish the job. Poor batting cost the 1st XI, failing to strike up any partnerships of note having put in a decent stint in the field. There were one or two highlights in the field with some decent bowling from all and a catch of graceful beauty by Rhino Hues - shock waves from the after math were reputedly recorded beyond the County border. The 2nd XI put up a game fight going down by just the one wicket at Warminster. For full reports follow links to the results pages.....

Let's get ready to rumble!
It's game time - 1st XI team sheet for the home match v Devizes and 2nd XI for the game away to Warminster. Good luck to both teams - nice.

So what's going on at Spye?
Following the Cricket Clubs Committee Meeting last night (Tuesday) we thought it would be a good idea to update everyone on how the pre-season preparations have been going.  The great scribe that is Mr Tom Mornement has stepped in to keep you all in the loop……

As you can see from the picture below the ground really is looking great – thanks to Robbie Enthoven the new pavilion is up and in full working order, the old one has been torn down and the ground has been re-seeded.

The Grounds Sub Committee – “Dave the Seed, Andy the Mow, Bevs the Roll and Kev the Sparky” have all done a fantastic job and put in long hours getting the pitch and outfield rolled, de-weeded and mowed. If you haven’t already been up to Spye this year then you’ll have to take my word for it but the grounds and the pitch are in a great condition and weather permitting will be ready for the 2 pre-season friendlies which start on Saturday 18th April and the 1st league game on Saturday 2nd May – contact Rich Bowater or Tom Mornement if you’re available and fancy a game.

Congratulations to Tim Hues who, after a very impressive plea, has been awarded the job of Pavilion Manager 2009, good luck big fella – I’m sure there’ll be more from him and his plans for the season, soon!

Finally a big Thank You to Rich for organising and running 3 very successful in-door net sessions – over the last 3 weekends I think that most of the club turned up at least once, there were even some new faces which all means that we’re going into the new season fit, keen and prepared – well sort of.  See you soon - Up the Spye!

Wednesday evening cricket......
Spye Park CC also play cricket on Wednesday evenings to have some fun and relieve stress after a long day at work. The short format of the game is great for any cricket enthusiast as there is always drama and always some big hitting - if you are interested in playing please give Liam Butcher (contact number: 07929368788) a call and he can get you a couple of games. UP THE SPYE strength and Honour.

Welcome to the 2009 season......lets get ready to rumble..
In tune with the regular and timely updates on this very website, how about that for photo of the month from one of our well-fed regular contributors. Clearly the snow has now gone but thankfully the Pavilion remains standing, is real and does pack a punch.

If Carlsberg and M&S got together & shook up the blueprint of a cricket pavilion then this bad boy might just have been the end result......

Accessories might very well include plasma flat screen tv with built in Sky Sports and a roof top terrace with hot tub....more details TBC

New to SPCC Website - the Grapevine
In a last ditch to try and squeeze some gossip out of you all, it's time to launch the spyepark.co.uk Grapevine. Our equivalent to the rumour mill - whether it be fact or fiction - we want to hear all about it.....so get in touch (email)

Our first entry should interest any self-respecting cider swiller out there - rumour has it (and I know in this case that this 'ere rumour is a dead cert in the truth stakes) the Cider Festival, usually held at the Barge @ Seend is relocating to the Oliver Cromwell on Saturday 23rd August this year. If any of you can confirm this is the case, let us know - sounds ripe for an end of season Club night on the apples......you know it makes sense so put it in the diary in case.
