Ben Amor
The first of the many Amors to play for Spye Park Ben joined the club in
the Charlie Oak field era. He has had so many nephews that have played
with him that practically everyone called him Uncle Ben. He was
essentially a very sound middle order batsman but perhaps is remembered
best as a very alert 'point' fielder; ct Amor b Owen appeared regularly
in the score book. We know though that Ben had a good batting season in
1937, because he retains the score book!, one of the few that can be
found. Ben brought great good humour to the team and was renowned for
the banter that he carried on, not only with the Spye team but opponents
as well. Woe betide the player who played a poor shot, dropped a catch
or misfielded a ball for he could be sure of a 'chi-iking' from Ben for
weeks. Now Ben also bowled a bit, off a short zig-zag run up. He
believes that he bowls best into a 'tucking wind'. There must have been
one such wind when GeorgeOwen asked him to open the bowling, for the
first and only time in his career, at Goatacre one day when he took 4
-32 the best bowling performance he remembers. It must have been his
best because if he had ever had a better one he would have remembered
it, and constantly have reminded us of it too!
