Spye Park Annual and 125th
Anniversary Dinner:
Friday 21st September at Bowood Golf & Country Club |
Thanks to those of you that have
confirmed numbers and sent in cheques to Dolly, Dave and Rich. For
those of you that are yet to confirm ticket requests please do so
ASAP so that we have a firmed feel for numbers.....your help with
this would be much appreciated.
And for those of you thinking of not coming along - THINK AGAIN -
it's a cracking night out and not one to miss. Details provided
below - all you need to do is drop Dave Beal or Rich Bowater a line.
|
|
| Volunteers needed - please
lend a hand - 22/23 September |
Please come along to the ground to
lend a hand wrapping things up for the winter. There's plenty to do
both in the pavilion and on the ground itself and if we can get a
good number of volunteers to help out if shouldn't take too long at
all. A great chance for those of us who don't have to do too much
over the course of the season so please get involved and let's get
things ready for next season.
Contact Jon Beal Snr if you have any questions otherwise see you at
the ground Saturday 22nd September from 9.30am. Please also note
that the following weekend is a back-up weekend in case more time is
needed or the weather is not so good. |
OUTSTANDING SUB's |
| Anyone yet to pay their sub's for
this season - due months ago - please pay up ASAP. The Club relies
on these funds and if we don't have your contributions soon we'll be
forced to send Dave round every Saturday morning to eat the entire
contents of your fridge.....you have been asked nicely and now
you've been warned. Be afraid - be very afraid - Dave is a hungry
boy.... |
|
End of season update.... |
Check out the links to your left to
see the latest results, scorecards and reports. We've yet to resolve
the technical issue on the two outstanding scorecards that Midge has
sent through but we will get there.
As yet, we have no scorecards from the 2nd XI - if a volunteer from
the team steps forward we'll be happy to help add these to the
website. We need these ASAP if we want to send in for the Year Book.
You know where we are - email

Another weekend wash-out |
Yet again the weather frustrated
both teams as games were cancelled which not only meant we missed
out on our weekend cricket fixes but also that certain players fell
victim to the cider - card school scenario......not that we would
condone such behaviour and reckless disregard for financial
prudence. All very friendly stuff as money passed hands from one
web-site editor to the other - no prizes for guessing that the
Farmer won.
Let's hope for better weather next weekend as the Sunday team fight
it out for the King George Cup; the 2's seek to project themselves
up the league table by claiming a home victory against Swindon
United Churches and the 1's take on the might of Potterne in the
eagerly anticipated top of the table clash.
Scorecards for the 1st XI have been updated and can be viewed
through the results page, stats have also been generated although
usefully I haven't copied the files over so bare with us. This buys
us all some time as there is only so much Bathey (the 'not-out'
king) bragging we'll be able to stomach as he's confirmed to be
averaging in the 50s....
Apologies again to the Sunday team - we have the scorecards from the
Golden Fleece and Wiltshire Queries games but are being frustrated
by our technical deficiencies....admitting defeat I shall be
consulting the web-site 'jedi master' otherwise known as the Tonge
Meister to resolve the problem. Watch this space and please note
that holding your breath is not advisable.
|
Thanks to Dave Baker |
Responding to my frankly limp
efforts to get the web-site up to speed, like a beacon shining light
upon eternal darkness, Dave has sent through a report on the
Georgians game against Bath Civil Service. Accordingly a new Reports
page has been added to the contents page to your left - take a
butchers. As for the scorecards - Midge has been sending these
through regularly and we shall be uploading to get up to speed but
I've had some issues with the CricketStatz software which I hope to
have resolved this weekend when I consult with Huesy. Nice.

REMINDER: 2007
Dinner - Friday 21st
September |
Just to remind you all that this year's dinner has been booked
at Bowood Golf & Country Club - please put the date in your diary.
Further details will follow shortly.
|
Caption Competitions |
All this action at once and now
you're being treated to not one but two caption competitions.
Firstly we have Nipper fresh after his 15-hour session under the sun
bed:

And then there's Huesy suffering the after-effects of a night on the
cider and sambucca with yours truly. This may have been some weeks
back but it only goes to show that there is only one way through a
hangover and Tim didn't take the man's way out and paid for it:

Captions welcomed at the usual
email with a pair of
tickets to your favourite Premiership team's next home match
together with travel expenses, over-night accommodation in a 5*
hotel and £500 spending money for the best offers1.

The Mighty
Spye Romp to Victory Again and Again |
Having played some distinctly
ordinary yet endlessly entertaining cricket for the most part of the
2007 campaign, the Spye 1st XI chalked up two more victories on the
road at Buscot Park and Box. The former being one of the more
picturesque grounds on the circuit and the latter benefiting from a
healthy portion of eye-candy on show.....including home and away
talent in equal measure.

Second XI Back to Winning Ways |
Cracking work by Spye as they get
back to winning ways with Chris Beaven starring with the bat beating
Chippenham by 55 runs. Whilst we have no Stats for the 2nd XI so far
this season the results page has been updated. If anyone from the
squad wants to volunteer uploading the scorecards or even just
providing us with copies so we can catch up during the close season please get
in touch.

New - Yapp Factor 2007 |
In celebration of Doely's re-birth
as one of the most irritating yappers on a cricket field and in true
reality web-site meets X-Factor stylee - we are this week launching
our quest to find the most irritating Yapper that graces the
hallowed cricket fields across the county, the region, the land -
even the world. However, no matter how far we cast the net I think
it is fair to say that a certain character that dons the gloves for
a quaint village not a million miles south of Devizes will feature in
our play-off (quite probably against a charming fellow from the
place with the stones) to see who claims the inaugural Yapp Factor
crown 2007. Please send through your nominations to us by
email and refrain from
taking offence as we are only having a laugh......
|
| Lack of Scandal &
Substance - 2007 web-site editors failing the club |
With Huesy away on a 4-week cruise
of the Caribbean the responsibility of the web-site falls alarmingly
on my shoulders. In view of this dilemma that I find myself in, any
scandal, substance or anything that takes your fancy that you would
like to see featured would be appreciated - send it through to us by
email
|
Sunshine at last |
'With the sunshine, comes the
cricket' - famous words from someone or other and at last the season
has started again following weeks of the wet stuff. The scorecards
from recent games including a return to winning ways for the first
team will follow - for the time being you'll have to put up with
random and incessant rambling in our feature length piece
documenting a typical match day at Spye (see article below). There
is a prize of one million pounds for the first person to correctly
identify how often the letter 'a' is used in the article - answers
on a postcard to 'www.getalife.com'1.
|
Breaking new
territory..... |
With little action on the pitch due
to the atrocious weather, you might be excused for expecting a
little more progress on the web-site, only to be disappointed by a
distinct lack of activity. For those of you seeking a moment of
entertaining distraction whilst at work or tucked away at home away
from the missus or fella, clearly your editors have failed to deliver
and so we break into new territory. Reporting live from the Field of
Dreams, we bring you insights and exclusive behind the scenes access
as the (recently not-so) mighty Spye take on Calne......
|
Weather Frustrations |
The weather continues to play havoc
to the seasons progress. The tourists were only able to fit in one
game but we expect they found plenty of pubs to take shelter from the
weather! We're sure there are a few stories that may need airing and
they would be gratefully received.
In the Wiltshire Leagues, the eagerly awaited League 1 top of the
table clash with Potterne was also washed away, the wicket being
covered in about an inch of water at one point! This weekend looks
no better forecast wise, but lets keep our fingers crossed.

Soggy Spye -
another game gets washed away by the shocking weather |
|
| Shockingly Slack Web-site
Editors |
Late nights in the pub and taking
the liberty of a whole week's holiday in sunny Portugal have held us
back from updating the web-site over the last couple of weeks. Our
apologies for the lack of commitment and we'll be doing our best to
satisfy your online needs over the next week or so.....needless to
say, just a couple of months in the job and the two of us are
struggling to match the quality of service that our Spyepark.co.uk
creator - the one and only Steve 'Athers' Tonge - provided before
us. Tongey we bow to your greatness and strive to get better.

| Dave's Weekly Words of
Wisdom |
Each
week Dave Beal will generously pass on his philosophies to us mere
mortals in the hope that we will spare some time to stop and ponder
the sheer complexities of subjects otherwise far beyond our simple
capacities of comprehension in
our new feature 'Dave's Weekly Words of Wisdom'.
"The
path to enlightenment is long and treacherous but it must always be
remembered that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single
step" (Dave 'Socrates' Beal, 2007)
This week, Dave brings us
two
musings on the topics of combat and materialism:
"Never
take your foot off a snakes neck - it may turn around and bite you"
"When
the wise man cannot have what he wants, the wise man learns to want
what he has"
